Abstract
Background: Acne and skin infections can be caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Papaya leaves (Carica papaya L..) are known to contain secondary metabolites with potential antibacterial activity. Utilizing an ethanolic extract of papaya leaves in a clay mask formulation offers an alternative use of natural ingredients for skin care. Objective: This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of a clay mask formulation containing ethanolic extract of papaya leaves (Carica papaya L..) against Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: This was an experimental study using extract obtained via maceration with 70% ethanol. The extract was formulated into clay masks at concentrations of 5% and 10%. The antibacterial activity of the formulations was tested against Staphylococcus aureus using the well-diffusion method, and activity was measured based on the diameter of the inhibition zone formed. Results: The results showed that the clay mask formulation containing papaya leaf ethanolic extract produced an average inhibition zone diameter of 19.24 mm for formula F1 and 24.49 mm for formula F2. The positive control produced an average inhibition zone diameter of 9.96 mm, whereas the negative control showed no inhibition zone formation. Conclusion: Based on the study results, it can be concluded that the clay mask formulation containing papaya leaf ethanolic extract possesses antibacterial activity against *Staphylococcus aureus*, with formula F2 demonstrating superior antibacterial activity based on the resulting inhibition zone diameter.
