Abstract

Worms is an intestinal parasitic worm infection from the intestinal nematode class which is transmitted through soil, or called Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH). STHs that are often found in humans are Ascaris lumbricoides, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, Trichuris trichiura, and Strongiloides stercoralis. This worm species can infect anyone, especially toddlers and elementary school children. In Indonesia, the prevalence of worms is 60-70%. The highest incidence of worm infections in Indonesia is in children aged less than 12 years. This study aims to determine toddlers and children at the Natonic Posyandu in Dusun 7 Merbaun Village, Kupang Regency to be free from worm infections. This study is an observational study with a cross sectional design, conducted in October 2020. The study population was children who attended the posyandu, with a purposive sample size of 48 students. The results showed that the maximum age was 2 years as many as 11 people (22.9%) and at least 9 years old as many as 2 people (4.2%). The distribution of children examined was 22 male (45.8%) and 26 female (54.2%). Of the 48 stool samples examined, it was found that 3 people were infected with Ascaris lumbricoides worms, 2 girls (4.2%) and 1 boy (2.1%). The number of negative ones was 45 people (93.8%). Some of the causes of worms are not wearing footwear, consuming food contaminated by larvae, defecating in any place, and the habit of washing hands. It is hoped that the government can carry out treatment at least every six months and all parties, both schools and families, implant healthy lifestyle.
